Ross Anderson
Ross's current position as Manager of the Haematology Department, Diagnostic Medlab follows twenty years in the same position for Diagnostic Laboratory and fourteen years working for the Auckland Hospital Board. He qualified at specialist level in Haematology with a particular interest in haemolytic anaemias and was involved in research projects relating to this area of pathology. Ross had a long association with Auckland University of Technology assisting in the development of the Diploma and more recently the BMLS degree. He was the chairman of the AUT BMLS Course Advisory Committee and was also the convenor of the NZIMLS Haematology Special Interest Group for many years.

  
Prof Brett Delahunt

Delahunt is Deputy Dean and Head of Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, Wellington School of Medicine. He graduated in medicine from the University of Otago in 1978 and following a period of postgraduate study at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington DC was appointed to the staff of the University of Otago.

Professor Delahunt is currently president of the NZ Society of Pathologists and has a research interest in urologic pathology

Sue Carnoutsos
Sue began her medical laboratory science career in 1975 as a laboratory assistant before joining the trainee program at Christchurch Hospital in 1978 and specialising in Haematology. She is currently the Section Head of Specialist Haematology and Haemopoietic Stem Cell Processing at Cantebury Health Laboratories. Sue's main area of laboratory interest is in the processing and manipulation of haemopoietic stem cell products as well as the diagnosis and characterisation of haemoglobinopathies and thalassaemia.

Sue has been actively involved since 1995 as a Scientific member and councillor for the Bone Marrow Transplant Scientist Association of Australasia (BMTSAA) and she is also a member of the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) and HSANZ.

  
Bruce Dove
Bruce's initial period of study and training in Medical Laboratory Science was in the 1970's, completing a NZC (Biology) concurrently with the Basic Training Certificate then qualifing in Biochemistry and specialising in Microbiology. Recently, Bruce undertook further study at the University of Auckland and finished a diploma of Business (Operations Management).

As well as Auckland Hospital, Bruce has worked in the Microbiology department at St James Hospital, then St George Hospital in London. Returning home, Bruce first worked in the Public Health Laboratory attached to Auckland Hospital then over the years he has had the opportunity to work in a variety of both hospital and community laboratories in Auckland. Bruce is currently employed in Microbiology at Diagnostic MedLab.

Shirley Gainsford
Shirley is well known to many technologists as the immediate past president of the NZ IMLS. She is Charge Scientist, Microbiology at Valley Diagnostic Ltd and holds a Diploma of Business Studies from Massey. She has been associated with the Board in its role as moderator of the BMLSc course

  
Chris Kendrick

Chris trained at Wanganui Hospital and was registered in the mid 70’s qualifying in Microbiology and Haematology/Immunohaematology.  After working in Haematology and Microbiology he moved into Immunohaematology, sat the Specialist examination, and became Charge Technologist of the Blood Bank.  He moved to the Department of Transfusion Medicine at Palmerston North Hospital in the latter part of the 1980’s.  In 1993 Chris moved to Massey University to teach the newly formed BMLSc degree, where today he is a Senior Lecturer in Haematology and Transfusion Science.  He graduated from Massey in 1997 with a Grad. Dip. Sci in Immunology and completed an MSc. in Microbiology in 2000.  Throughout his career, Chris has been a Member of the NZ Institute of Medical Laboratory Science and stood down from the Presidency of the Institute in 2006 after 14 years involvement at Council level.

Kura Denness

Kura Denness MBA CA has a background in corporate finance, most recently in the oil and gas industry. She is also a director of the following organisations: Tui Ora Limited, Hauora Taranaki PHO Limited, Te Aroha Medcare Limited, Te Matai Whetu Limited, Taranaki DHB, PHARMAC, Te Atiawa (Taranaki) Holdings Limited and a negotiator on the Te Atiawa Iwi Authority.

Kura is the mother of two young sons and is of Te Atiawa descent.

 


Esther Tumama Cowley- Malcolm
Esther is currently Chair of The Pacific Development and Conservation Trust (formerly known as the Rainbow Warrior Trust), member of the Board of The Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) and chairs the HRC Pacific Research Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the Community and Family Services (MSD) Pacific Advisory Committee, member of The Board of The Parenting Council of New Zealand and also Manager, Pacific Research Workforce Development on the Pacific Islands Families longitudinal research study at The Auckland University of Technology.

 


Laurie Manley

Laurie has 30 years experience as a Research and Clinical Medical Laboratory Technician and has worked in Australia, the UK and the Middle East. She gained a QTA in Biochemistry (1976) while working in Christchurch and then specialised in Radioimmunoassay and ELISA techniques. She later worked in the Steroid Unit (CDHB), and for the past 7 years in the Endocrinology lab at Christchurch Hospital.  Before being appointed to the Board in 2006, Laurie was one of two medical laboratory technician representatives invited to attend MLSB meetings. 

Wendi Wicks

Wendi Wicks has a background in public policy and research. She currently works as national policy researcher for Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA). Her work ranges over disability policy, employment, equity, women's health, reproductive technologies and health information systems. Wendi has a diploma in radiography and a Masters in Social Work (MSW).
