Code of Competencies and Standards

The board is currently reviewing its code of competencies and standards.  In the meantime, this is the existing code of competencies and standards for Medical Laboratory Technologists.

The Code of Competencies and Standards for Medical Laboratory Technologists is to act as a guide and assist them in all areas of medical laboratory science in which they are engaged.

  1. Medical Laboratory Technologists will act in such a manner that will justify public trust and confidence. This will be achieved through high standards of professional competency as well as through professional conduct and appearance.
     
  2. Medical Laboratory Technologists shall provide relevant and accurate clinical information. They will work within pertinent legislation and be guided by accepted standards such as the New Zealand Code of Laboratory Management Practice.
     
  3. Medical Laboratory Technologists shall practice without bias to a patient or colleague's gender, race, religion, political belief or medical condition.
     
  4. Medical Laboratory Technologists shall respect the confidential and personal nature of professional records and protect the patient's right to privacy by keeping their information in the strictest confidence. They shall also maintain the protocols of informed consent.
     
  5. Medical Laboratory Technologists will continually strive to maintain and improve their knowledge and competency in medical laboratory science. They will also share their knowledge with colleagues and promote learning.
     
  6. Medical Laboratory Technologists will be responsible for reporting any unethical conduct or illegal professional activities to the appropriate bodies.
