Qualified overseas

The Information Guide to Registration in NZ is in preparation.

In the meantime, information on the qualifications and experience required for registration is given in the document Paths to Registration.  This document replaces the version adopted in September 2004.

Since 18 September 2004, the Board has maintained a Register of medical laboratory professionals in two scopes of practice: medical laboratory technicians and medical laboratory scientists.

Apart from some exceptions in the specimen collection area, all medical laboratory technicians including mortuary technicians and phlebotomists need to be registered in the scope of medical laboratory technician.

Overseas-qualified medical laboratory staff who wish to become registered in New Zealand (whether scientists or technicians) need to complete the two forms below:

Medical Laboratory Technicians

Medical laboratory technicians and assistants, and phlebotomists, must be registered under the scope of practice of medical laboratory technician to practise in New Zealand .

To qualify for registration, you must have an appropriate qualification (this will be determined by the Board in each case), at least twelve months of experience in a medical laboratory (or blood donor centre), and a sign-off from your supervisor stating that you can perform the required skills.

Applicants with qualifications from outside New Zealand but who have New Zealand medical laboratory experience may apply in the same way as New Zealand applicants, using the current application form.

If your medical laboratory experience was not gained in New Zealand , your application should be accompanied by evidence of your work experience, signed by a supervisor or employer.  Approval of your application may be on an interim basis, subject to satisfactory performance for six months in a New Zealand medical laboratory.

Medical Laboratory Scientists

Qualifications for registration:

To use the title "medical laboratory scientist", you need to be on the Board's Register of Medical Laboratory Scientists. The MLT Board is responsible for processing applications for registration, and setting the registration standard. Applicants must provide information that will satisfy the Board that they hold a prescribed qualification or equivalent qualifications suitable for registration.

A person with qualifications gained outside of New Zealand is entitled to registration in New Zealand as a medical laboratory scientist who satisfies the Board:

  • that he or she holds a post-graduate qualification, approved by the Board in each case, combined with relevant and specialised medical laboratory experience that in the opinion of the Board is sufficient for registration as a medical laboratory scientist
  • that he or she has undergone a course of training, examinations and post-qualification medical laboratory experience that, in the opinion of the Board, are substantially equivalent to the course of training for the New Zealand BMLSc degree
  • that he or she is the holder of an undergraduate qualification, approved by the Board in each case, combined with relevant and specialised laboratory experience that in the opinion of the Board is sufficient for registration.

The New Zealand BMLSc degree is a four-year degree including one year of practical training.

More information will be supplied soon on qualifications approved by the board.

Work experience requirement:

Evidence must be supplied by all applicants of satisfactory work experience in a medical laboratory, gained after they have finished their degree. Evidence of work experience should include the duration of the employment and preferably information on the tasks undertaken and responsibilities held.

The duration of the work experience required varies depending on the qualification. Please contact the Registrar of the Board if your graduate work experience is less than 2 years FTE (Full Time Equivalent).

The Board may, in special circumstances, accept evidence of laboratory experience gained prior to the completion of an approved qualification.

Certified copies required

All documents supporting your application must be certified as true copies of the original, by a solicitor, Justice of the Peace, Notary Public, or officer authorised to take statutory declarations. If your documentation is in a language other than English, you must provide certified translations.

Fees (effective from 16 October 2006)

Application for Registration (if qualifications gained outside New Zealand):

Scientist: $NZ480.00

Technician: $NZ350.00

Please do not send payment for your Annual Practising Certificate with your application.

Please make cheques out to Medical Laboratory Science Board. Payment must be in New Zealand dollars by cash, credit card, or international bank draft or New Zealand trading bank cheque. VISA and MasterCard are accepted. Your application may not be processed if payment is received in a foreign currency. (See payment form for details.)

Marriage Certificate/Change of Name

If you have changed your name since gaining any of your medical laboratory technology qualifications, you should supply evidence (such as a marriage certificate) to support the entry of your new name into the Register.

Photograph

One passport style photograph, signed with your usual signature and certified to be a true likeness of yourself (indicating your name) by a referee or a Justice of the Peace on the reverse.

Other Requirements for Registration

The Board requires all applicants to complete the Application for Registration, and provide all details and your signature. Included with this form are two Certificate of Good Character forms, which may be used to certify your character. Other recent testimonials (originals or certified copies) may be supplied instead of these certificates.

If you are registered with a licensing/registration authority in your home country, you must supply evidence of your current registration status and a current (not more than 6 months old) Certificate of Good Standing. The Certificate of Good Standing (or Certificate of Status) should clearly state that there are no outstanding complaints against you in respect of your conduct as a health professional.

If you are not registered with a licencing or registration authority, you may be required by the Board to supply a Police Clearance Certificate, or its equivalent, that would inform the Board about any Court convictions you may have.
