Other Medical Laboratory Science Qualifications
The Information Guide to Registration in NZ is in
preparation. In the meantime, the
most up-to-date information on the qualifications and
experience required for registration is given in the
document
Paths to Registration or
on the
overseas qualified page.
The Board assesses
applications for registration according to the
medical laboratory science content of their
qualifications. If you have less than 3 years
training in medical laboratory
sciences/technology, you
would not be accepted for registration in the
scientist scope but may qualify for registration
as a medical laboratory technician.
If you have
three years of training plus relevant
experience in medical laboratory
sciences/technology, you may be accepted for
registration in the scientist scope, and if
declined would most likely qualify for
registration as a medical laboratory technician.
For
registration as a medical laboratory scientist,
the Board expects applicants to have an
applied biomedical science degree or equivalent.
A degree in medicine is not considered
equivalent to a medical laboratory technology
qualification for the purposes of registration.
To support your application, please provide the
Board with a complete academic transcript of
your medical laboratory science course from your
training institution (in English). This should
list the subjects taken and the grades/marks
obtained and any necessary information on the
grading system used.
If you do not hold one of
the qualifications named as an
approved qualification for registration as a medical laboratory scientist, you may be asked to
provide the Board with a complete academic syllabus (curriculum) of your medical laboratory science
course from your training institution (in English). If requested by the Board, you must supply
detailed descriptions of the contents of each subject, and hours required for each year of study,
from your training institution.
Assessment of Overseas Qualifications by New Zealand Qualifications Authority
The Board may in some circumstances ask that you should obtain a prior assessment of your qualifications
from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). You may wish to supply an evaluation by NZQA to the
Board with your application, as additional evidence.
A NZQA Application for Evaluation of Qualifications form, can be obtained from
NZQA Evaluations,
PO Box 160,
Wellington.
