Requirements for Overseas-qualified applicants

Before sending your application, please make sure you complete and enclose the following:
  1. Medical Laboratory Science Board Application for Registration form, signed and dated.
      
  2. Completed Certificates of Good Character, by people who are not related to you.
      
  3. Application for Registration fee $NZ480.00 (scientist application) or $NZ350 (technician application).  (Payment made to Medical Laboratory Science Board)
      
  4. Evidence of your registration status, and a current Certificate of Good Standing, if you are registered with a licensing authority in your country.
      
  5. Copies of qualifications, academic transcript and other documents supporting your application, all such documents certified as true copies of the original. (Copies may be certified by persons such as a notary public, Justice of the Peace, officer of the Court, solicitor, etc)

     
  6. Originals or certified copies of letters from employers providing evidence you have met the minimum work experience requirement of the Board appropriate to your qualification.

     
  7. One passport-style photograph, signed with your usual signature and certified to be a true likeness of yourself (indicating your name) by a referee or a Justice of the Peace on the reverse.

     
  8. Where an overseas-trained applicant has not been trained in English, either an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test is required, or two testimonials from English-speaking supervisors stating that the applicant can communicate effectively in the laboratory.

    The Board may require, as a condition of registration, that the evidence of a New Zealand supervisor will be required to verify that the applicant can communicate in English effectively within the laboratory.

    Medical Laboratory Scientists: The Board will accept results in the Academic version of  the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)   The applicant must obtain an overall band score  of no less than 7.0 overall and band scores of no less than  7.0 in any category. 

    Medical Laboratory Technicians: The Board will accept results in the Academic version of  the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)   The applicant must obtain an overall band score  of no less than 6.5 overall and band scores of no less than  6.0 in any category.

If you are applying from outside New Zealand, you must allow 2-4 weeks processing time for your application, starting from the date your completed application form, plus all fees and documents, is received by the MLSB
