Graduate Diploma

Diploma Route to Registration as Medical Laboratory Scientist

The Board has approved a route to registration as a medical laboratory scientist via completion of an approved graduate diploma. Study for the diploma would normally be carried out while the student was employed in a medical laboratory as a registered medical laboratory technologist.

The bridging programme will take the form of a Graduate Diploma in Science approved by the Board, or a Diploma of Applied Science meeting the same criteria.

Information on the bridging programme, and an application form, can be downloaded. Click here

Requirements for registration via the Diploma route:

  • Applicant must successfully complete an approved course of study for the diploma.
  • Applicant must be employed in an IANZ-accredited NZ clinical laboratory and have his/her employer's support to undertake the practical (laboratory) components of the course: the applicant must present evidence of employer support to the Board prior to commencement of the diploma.
  • Applicant must have completed 12 months in a medical laboratory prior to course commencement (that need not be a NZ medical lab).
  • Applicant must successfully complete any programme of prior study as proposed by the relevant University and approved by the Board. The Board has prepared an application form on which the university's approval of admission to the diploma course, and any conditions, may be documented.
  • Applicant will be approved for registration on course completion, providing that in no case will registration be approved in less than 2 years after commencement of course: that is, at least two years of post-enrolment, appropriate full-time or equivalent employment in a medical laboratory is required.
  • The Board will normally require 6 months of supervised practice post-registration.
Those interested in obtaining registration through this route should contact AUT or Massey University about their courses
